Abstract

Word games in teaching and learning vocabulary is aimed to help students in developing and maintaining an interest in word. It is supported by worksheet to make students easier to understand the meaning. This research is conducted at the year fifth of SDN Bangkir Sumedang. This research is intended to investigate the problem empirically on what is the students’ vocabulary mastery by using word games?; What is the students’ vocabulary mastery without using word games?; How significant is the difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery between students taught by using word games and students taught without word games? The method used in this research is experimental method. The students are divided into two groups: experimental group (teaching vocabulary by using word games) and control group (teaching vocabulary without using word games). To get the data, the study used pre test and post test. The data analysis is used to calculate a significant influence between teaching by using word games and teaching without word games on student’s vocabulary mastery. The counting uses statistical method with “t test. Data analysis shows that the students’ vocabulary mastery by using word games in the experimental group has the average score16.1 and the control group has the average 14.2. It means that, the experimental group has higher score than control group. The counting of t-test had the data t count = 4.2 ≥ t table = 2.9. It can be said that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. So, teaching English using word games has medium influence on students’ vocabulary mastery. Other possible teaching methods that can influence students’ vocabulary mastery are teaching methods using the song, picture and animation
