Abstract

English has taught since the fourth year of MI as local content. It means that the sixth year students have been learning English almost two years or more. They must be able to reading aloud correctly, especially pronunciation. In fact, they are still making errors in their pronunciation while reading aloud. Therefore, this research is focused to investigate pronunciation errors in reading aloud that made by the sixth year students. Beside that, this research will investigate the student’s difficulties and their solution. This research is done at the sixth year students of MI Padasuka Sumedang. The totals of population are fifteen students. They are as respondents of this research. The discussion of this paper is limited by proposing three questions: 1) types of the student's pronunciation errors; 2) kinds of the difficulties that faced the students in reading aloud pronunciation; 3) kinds of solutions to overcome the student’s pronunciation errors in reading aloud. The data is collected through several instruments, such as test, interview, and documentation. This research uses descriptive method. Mistake and error are inherent part of learning process. However, both of them are technically different cases. Mistake is caused by the performance when the students comprehend the target language system. Error could occur in long duration when there is no correlation. In this research, it is found four types of the student’s pronunciation errors. They are omission, addition, selection, and misordering. The most types of errors that made by students are selection whereas the little pronunciation errors that made students are misordering. Beside that, in this research is found five kinds of the student’s difficulties. They are interference, less of practice, less of vocabulary, less of motivation, and less of mastering of materials. The significant problem faced by the students is interference. There are five solutions for the student’s pronunciation improvement in this research. They are discussing with friends, having more practice, consulting dictionary, listening, and consulting to their teacher. After investigating, gathering, and analyzing the data, it is concluded that interference is the major factor that causes the student’s errors in pronunciation. As suggestion from the result of the research as follows: the students have to practice reading aloud continuously. Beside that, they can learn from other media such as television, cassettes, and CDs to improving pronunciation. The teacher often gives reading text toward students aimed to overcome the difficulties in pronunciation. This research can be used as an alternative source for next study or research other cases.
