Abstract

The population of the research is the semester eight of English Education Department (EED) State Islamic University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung and the sample is taken from the students English Education Department class C year 2006 which consist of 33 students. In this study, the writer tries to find out correlation between using the Oprah Winfrey Show as media in learning English process with the students speaking ability. The writer wants to know whether there are influences of using the show in television on students’ speaking ability. The writer chooses The Oprah Winfrey Show as media because based on the survey this show is the most popular talk show in the word, and the writer also find several students in English Education Department (EED) class C watched the show. The writer uses the Oprah Winfrey Show as media for students to improve their speaking ability. By watching the Oprah Winfrey Show students have an easy media that help improve their speaking ability, although not significant, little change can make significant improvement when the students really use the Oprah Winfrey Show as a media to help them improve their speaking ability. The Oprah Winfrey Show is interesting talk show so the students don’t get bored. The students must watch the show seriously to develop their speaking ability and practice their speaking by a discussing the content of the show with their friends. In this research the writer found the correlation between watching the Oprah Winfrey Show with the students speaking ability. The writer uses questionnaire to find out the data about the students’ activity of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show and uses the oral test to measure the students’ speaking ability. The writer has formulated the hypothesis of this research: “There is a significant correlation between the students’ activity of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show and their speaking ability.� To formulate and calculate the data, the writer has used Pearson Product Moment Correlation. It is used to describe the strength of the correlation between students’ activity of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show and their speaking ability. The result of the investigation shows that the correlation coefficient is 0.51. It means that there is middle correlation between students’ activity of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show and their speaking ability. The writer found out that students’ activity watching the Oprah Winfrey Show is one of the factors that influence the students’ English achievement. By looking at the result of determining coefficient, DC = 26.01%, it means the students’ English achievement was influenced by the students’ activity of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show.
