Abstract

The research was conducted at English Education Department year 2006 of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The subjects are the students who had got Reading Courses for 3 or 4 semesters. Almost of their entire project in lecturing use English are the main reason for this research. The study is aimed at studying and describing the difficulties in reading and variety of reading strategies that may occur among the students in Enhancing Reading Comprehension Skill. Further, this study also investigated and analyzed the difficulties and the strategies contributing to their comprehension. The research is qualitative study implementing descriptive method. The main approach of this research is the descriptive explorative method, which aim to describe the situation or status phenomenon (Arikunto, 1998: 245). In this research, the data will be collected through two instruments: (1) Questionnaire, and (2) interview. The questionnaires were distributed to know the students difficulties, and their strategies. After analyzing the data, the study showed that they used the strategies called skimming – scanning strategy, summarizing strategy, predicting strategy, and consulting the dictionary in their own word. It can be classified from fifteen students: 60% students consulted the dictionary; 30% students used predicting strategy, and; 10% students guessed the word to make their reading comprehension more easily. Moreover, the strategy showed that for the English learners in English foreign language at English Education Department, strategy in reading was not a guarantee to accurate strategies, there was a general strategy that almost students used, that is, consulting the dictionary.
