Abstract

This purpose of the research is to analyze violated cooperative principle and characteristics of man and woman language in “Second Presidential Debate United States of America 2017”. In this case, the aims of the research are (1) To analysis how the maxims of cooperative principles violated by man and woman presidential candidates and (2) To find out the characteristics of man and woman languages make the candidates violated the cooperative principle.This research utilizes cooperative principle from Grice (1975) and language gender from Tannen (1990) which supported with theory of pragmatics from Yule (1996) and theory language gender from Lakoff (1975).The method of this research is using descriptive qualitative approach. The research question will be answered in analytical description. The object study is transcript second presidential debate United States of America 2017 which picked up by official website media online. The result of this research show there are 27 utterances from each candidates violated the maxim, 17 utterances from man candidates (Donald J. Trump) and 11 utterances from woman candidates (Hillary Clinton). The maxims which violated are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relate and maxim of manner. The characteristics of man and woman language also affect the way they violated the cooperative principle. There are 5 data from man candidates which include the characteristics of man’s language, those are: men more independent, men more giving advice, men like to give information, men more direct and men resist problem vocally. And 3 data from woman candidates which include the characteristics of woman’s language, those are: woman more intimacy, woman more seeking for support, and woman more indirect.
