Abstract

This research describes pragmatic politeness strategies in Zootopia movie script. The main issues in this research are about positive politeness, negative politeness and the factors that influence the use of positive politeness and negative politeness strategies that is used by the characters in Zootopia movie script. This research uses politeness theory by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson (1987) to analyze the object and the object of this research was taken from conversation between the characters in Zootopia movie script. This research uses qualitative method. It is used to give description about the utterances in the conversation between the characters in Zootopia movie script. In collecting data, the writer uses documentation study. Then, analyze the data by way of classifying, interpreting, explaining the data and drawing a conclusion. The results of this research are from 43 data, there are 30 data use positive politeness and 13 data use negative politeness strategy. From 30 data that have been analyzed, it can be concluded that the most emerging strategy of positive politeness is ‘use in group identity markers’ strategy. There are 5 data which use that strategy. From 13 data of negative politeness, it can be concluded that the most emerging strategy are ‘be conventionally indirect’ and ‘give deference’ strategy, with 3 data of each strategy. The factors that influence the use of positive politeness and negative politeness are affected by status of the characters, the closer the relationship between speaker and hearer, then the speaker will uses positive politeness and vice versa. The more power the speaker has, then he/she will uses positive politeness and vice versa.
